This is smart. When I launched Newcomer I positioned it as "insider" writing in the first line of the post. I have to balance my experience in journalism and honoring some of those values while delivering writing that really gets where Silicon Valley's head is at and feels of the industry. When we covered the Pirate Wires mafia game a big component of that piece was the meta story.

🙏🙏 interesting to be in between worlds a bit which I fashion you to be, only a handful really in that category

This substack is trending towards insider media...I can see you being on the next season of mafia :)

very true, this is an insider media essay

but the founders fund aesthetic is more power or more rogue!

It has always been information (speed and quality) that wins wars. One wants to get the accurate information and holding secrets while supplying counter-info to the opponent while preventing secrets from being stolen.

In business it's about narratives in both sending signals to the public as well as the opponents. Hence why new media is so valuable in disseminating info.

It is interesting how insider media (or tech niche publications) of the previous generation - TechCrunch, The Information, etc. - became outsider media.

Yeah I think you rightly pointed out they’re more niche than insider - big divide is the Journalstic standard/style and wanting to seem independent, on top of the outsider personalities

so true, a16z coined the term "new media" but failed to explain what it truly means, I think you stated it perfectly well, and on the topic of seeing something "new", I think the founders fund strategy to play mafia is so good, as it shows potential partners how X founder thinks and acts in situations. Question : I'm a media partner to EU VC funds, what's something "new" you'd like to see that could have massive potential?
